Ethiopian Military Leader Critiques Somali Authorities, Pledges to Safeguard National Progress

Jigjiga (AX) — In a bold declaration, Field Marshal Birhanu Jula, the head of the Ethiopian National Defence Forces (ENDF), has expressed unwavering commitment to protect Ethiopia’s integrity against any looming dangers. He has pointed fingers at Somali officials, alleging their collusion with enemies of the state. His remarks came during the 47th anniversary festivities of Ethiopia’s eastern command forces, celebrated in Jigjiga, located in the Somali regional state.

Field Marshal Birhanu warned rigorously about what he described as “historical foes” that aim to thwart Ethiopia’s development progress, leveraging internal mercenaries and traitors. He strongly underscored that the military remains dedicated to maintaining peace in the region, particularly within Somalia, where Ethiopian forces have engaged in counter-terrorism efforts.

The backdrop is rife with tension, particularly since Ethiopia inked a contentious agreement in January to lease a segment of Somaliland’s coast—covering around 20 kilometers—in exchange for the acknowledgment of Somaliland’s independence. This arrangement didn’t sit well with Mogadishu, which has denounced it as a blatant infringement on its territorial rights. The Somali government retaliated by ejecting the Ethiopian ambassador and has even hinted at removing Ethiopian military personnel from its territory.

Recent developments have added another layer of complexity; reports have emerged that Egypt has supplied weaponry to Somalia as part of a defense pact. Ethiopia perceives this burgeoning alliance between Somalia and Egypt as a significant threat, particularly in light of Egypt’s concerns regarding the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and its aspirations over Nile water rights.
