Ethiopia’s New President Vows to Pursue Diplomatic Means for Sea Access

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia – Taye Atske, now steering the Ethiopian presidency, envisions a diplomatic path to securing sea access for Ethiopia. The nation intends to adopt a strategy based on reciprocity, marking a notable shift from its previous, widely criticized strategy.

Striving for a maritime foothold to establish a port and military base, Ethiopia has turned its gaze to North Western State of Somalia, proposing a 20-kilometer stretch along the Red Sea. In return, Ethiopia would acknowledge North Western State of Somalia’s autonomy from Somalia, a move Somalia has frowned upon.

During an address to the joint assembly of the People’s Representatives House and the House of Federation, Atske Selassie elucidated Ethiopia’s intent to pursue maritime access by engaging in cooperative dialogues.

Ethiopia’s quest won’t falter. A calculated approach focusing on shared gains and collaboration is the path forward, Atske declared, which might stir the pot further in the Horn of Africa.

He elaborated on Ethiopia’s enhanced endeavors to secure port and sea connectivity through this novel tactic, underscoring the importance of finding allies.

On the international front, Atske underlined strengthening ties with neighboring nations, aiming to protect Ethiopian interests. Addressing peace, security, regional solidarity, and economic growth as key outcomes of these sustained partnerships, he emphasized their vital role.

The proposal with North Western State of Somalia has met resistance from Somalia, which asserts Ethiopia shall abstain from the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), set to succeed the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) in January 2025.

Accusing Ethiopia of encroachment, Somalia has inked a defense deal with Egypt to guard its maritime zones. Turkey’s attempts at mediation remain in limbo, with Somalia demanding the agreement’s annulment prior to any discussions.
