First for Gambia, return for Gabon, failure for DR Congo. Group D in the qualifiers for the African Cup of Nations (CAN 2021*), delivered his judgment on 25 March 2021 before the last day scheduled for 29 March.
The Gambians and Gabonese secured the two qualifying places this Thursday and won against the Angolans and Congolese respectively. The DRC-Gambia and Angola-Gabon meetings will therefore only appoint the first in the group.
Convincing Gabonese
Despite travel conditions and preparations that are very complicated by Covid, the Panthers of Gabon are convincing during the first period. With 10 minutes played, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang came in from the right and could have had the tying goal, but the defenders successfully repelled the attack by Denis Bouanga. This ricochets of the outside of the opposite right upright.
Although the playing speed is not always very high in Franceville, the technical level is good, as illustrated by Aaron Boupendza’s fantastic goal. In the 44th minute, the attacker started in a series of hooks and body tricks. Placed on his left foot, he sends a powerful strike in the opposite right window: 1-0.
In the second period, Bouanga, who has not been rewarded so far, finishes a counterattack by sliding the ball between goalkeeper Joël Kiassumbua: 2-0, 72nd. In the 85th minute, Aubameyang, alone at the far post, drives the point home with a cross shot : 3-0. After missing CAN 2019 in Egypt, Aubameyang and his gang return to neighboring Cameroon.
Congolese reading is eliminated
This will not be the case for Congo Leopards. Beaten 0-3, they can no longer catch up with Gambia in the table. The Gambians have really won at the same time 1-0 against the Angolans thanks to a performance by Assan Ceesay. A great moment of happiness for the Scorpions who had never played in the final phase.
For the Congolese, on the other hand, it is the end of the series, those who had participated in the last four African cups.
* The African Football Confederation (CAF) has decided that the competition will continue to be called CAN 2021, despite being postponed until 2022.
