Gambian MPs on 15 July 2024 rejected a bill that would have lifted the ban on excision and female genital mutilation in place since 2015, following months of controversy and international pressure. They rejected all the changes proposed to the 2015 text that would have decriminalized the practice. If they had voted in favor of the text, Gambia, a small West African country, would have become the first in the world to lift the ban on female genital mutilation, according to the United Nations.
