legislative election, new stage in the magazine

The offices will open this Saturday at 8. 24 million voters are urged to elect the 407 deputies to the National People’s Congress, for a five-year term, in early legislative elections.

This election, organized after the revision of the constitution, marks a new stage in the roadmap that an Algerian power has set out in search of legitimacy, more than two years after the fall of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

If the former National Assembly was dominated by the FLN and RND parties, its composition could change. These two formations present lists, but are largely discredited by the crisis the country is going through. The FLN Secretary – General’s candidacy in this vote was also rejected.

And for the first time, the number of lists appears as independent, whose affiliation is sometimes vague, exceeds those presented by some thirty political parties, including several Islamist groups.

It is also absent to note, several opposition parties including the RCD, the Labor Party or the FFS have decided not to participate. The election is also rejected by Hirak.

It is taking place in the context of increased repression, marked by arrests and legal proceedings against Hirakists, opponents and journalists. Thursday night, two journalists including Khaled Drareni was arrested, as well as Karim Tabbou, figure of Hirak.

One of the challenges will be the turnout after the last two elections (presidential election and referendum on the revision of the constitution) which are characterized by a strong abstention.
