South Africa's Constitutional Court Halts Deportation of Asylum Seekers

The Constitutional Court has struck down portions of South Africa’s Refugees Act that permitted immigration officials to deport asylum seekers who entered the country without a transit visa, finding those provisions unconstitutional.

The judgment takes effect immediately and upholds a Western Cape High Court decision handed down last year in a case initiated by the Scalabrini Centre of Cape Town.
