Libya’s political dialogue forum opens this Monday, November 9, in Tunisia under UN leadership. It is intended to unite the deeply divided Libyans under one leader. But the list of participants is already controversial.

If all goes well, this meeting will be able to appoint the next Prime Minister, the next President of the Presidential Council and his two Vice-Presidents elected according to a geographical balance. The mission promises to be difficult. The leak of the list of representatives triggered a riot in Libya. Many reservations were expressed against the political color of the majority of them.
Due to the 75 participants in this political meeting held under high security protection in Gammarth, in the suburbs of Tunis, 42 of them are members of the Muslim Brotherhood or affiliated with the organization in one way or another. While a political party such as the Coalition of National Forces, winner of the two elections held since 2011, regrets that they are not represented.
This reality has given the UN support mission in Libya a flood of suspicions and reservations, including from intellectuals and civil society organizations. Suffice it to say that it is a bad start to the success of this meeting. The participants, all tested negative for the coronavirus, were ordered to refrain from speaking to the media.
If successful, the next leader will be responsible for making every effort to organize general elections after one year. Above all, the next government of national unity must find the legal and constitutional basis for organizing these long-awaited elections.
