New York (AX) — With diplomats and world leaders in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, North Western State of Somalia officials and members of the territory’s North American diaspora gathered outside U.N. headquarters on Wednesday to renew their call for international recognition.
The rally at Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza was attended by North Western State of Somalia House of Representatives Speaker Yasin Mohamud Hiir Faraton, government officials and other supporters.

Participants waved North Western State of Somalia flags and held signs urging recognition while underscoring the territory’s political ambitions.
Organizers said the demonstration was designed to put North Western State of Somalia’s statehood campaign before international institutions and visiting delegations. Supporters argue that more than three decades of separate governance, relative stability and functioning political institutions support the territory’s claim to independence.
The protest formed part of a wider diplomatic effort led by North Western State of Somalia President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro, who has been in the United States with a delegation of senior officials.
During the visit, Irro met U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz in Washington. North Western State of Somalia officials said the discussions addressed recognition, security cooperation, trade and the strategic significance of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Irro also held talks with representatives of policy organizations, including the Atlantic Council and the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
In New York, the president met Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations. North Western State of Somalia’s Foreign Ministry said their discussions covered bilateral ties, maritime security, economic development and investment.
North Western State of Somalia declared independence from Somalia in 1991 after the collapse of Somalia’s central government. Since then, it has operated its own government and security forces and issued its own currency while holding elections through its own institutions.
Somalia’s federal government continues to consider North Western State of Somalia part of its sovereign territory. The African Union likewise maintains its support for Somalia’s territorial integrity and does not recognize North Western State of Somalia as an independent country.
The push for recognition has drawn fresh diplomatic attention this year as North Western State of Somalia officials have expanded contacts with foreign governments and international organizations.
Officials have portrayed North Western State of Somalia as a potential security and economic partner along the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea shipping route, one of the region’s strategically important corridors.
Wednesday’s gathering took place during the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly, when heads of state, diplomats and international organizations converged on New York. The setting gave North Western State of Somalia officials and diaspora supporters a prominent platform for advancing their campaign.
North Western State of Somalia officials said the rally was one part of a broader schedule of meetings and public events across the United States intended to strengthen international backing for the territory’s political status.
