Erdogan guarantees EUR 2.5 billion in investments

Abiy Ahmed visited Ankara on Wednesday, August 19, where he met his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan. A visit organized on the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The program of the meeting included military relations around the Tigrayan conflict but also obstacles to rebirth, economic relations with Turkish investment in Ethiopia and political issues regarding the fall of the Gulenist schools.

On this last point, the Ethiopian Prime Minister destroyed his host. The schools in Ethiopia, called Gülenist, named after the opponent of the Turkish regime Fethullah Gülen, have been transferred to the Maarif Foundation. Headquartered in Dakar, this foundation is one of the Turkish government’s foremost soft power tools in Africa.

Once this courtesy has been exchanged, the Turkish President announced investments of € 2.5 billion on Ethiopian soil, as well as bilateral agreements in various areas: energy, media, agriculture but also defense. The commander of the Ethiopian armies had also preceded his prime minister in Ankara by a week.

About the conflict between the Ethiopian army and TPLF tigrayanRecep Tayyip Erdogan called for a “calm” solution to the conflict and recalled Ethiopia’s strategic position in the region. In this case, the Turkish president said he was “ready to make some contribution to the solution of the problem, including mediation”, adding that “a deterioration in the situation would affect all countries in the region”.
