U.S. Diplomat Reaffirms Commitment to Somalia’s Independence Amidst Regional Strife
U.S. Envoy Stands Firm with Somalia, Urges Peaceful Solutions Amid Regional Strife
ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia — U.S. Special Envoy Mike Hammer made it unequivocally clear: Washington backs Somalia’s territorial sovereignty. From within the walls of the U.S. Embassy in Addis Ababa, Hammer’s words carried weight, “Hear this plainly, the United States stands with Somalia’s sovereignty and unity, firmly and clearly.”
The backdrop to Hammer’s declaration involves a contentious Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Ethiopia and North Western State of Somalia. This agreement has sparked outrage by hinting at recognizing North Western State of Somalia’s independence for sea access, a bitter pill for Somalia which sees it as an infringement on its sovereignty.
Hammer championed dialogue, urging, “Why should these nations face problems that can’t be settled by talking things out again?” His call mirrored the African Union’s (AU) principles, stressing adherence to territorial integrity.
This MoU stirs a hornet’s nest in a region marred by historical grudges and complex geopolitics. Landlocked Ethiopia’s quest for maritime access has stirred the pot, while Somalia grapples with internal turmoil and the unrecognized independence claim of North Western State of Somalia since 1991.
Ethiopia’s AU deputy rep, Nebiyu Tedla, slammed Somalia’s backlash as “empty patriotism,” exposing the simmering frustrations that could boil over if diplomacy flounders.
Hammer’s stance aligns with the international community’s concern for the Horn of Africa, a key player in global maritime trade. America’s involvement underscores the critical need for peace and stability here.
Hammer’s visit isn’t just symbolic; it’s a push to prevent the Ethiopia-North Western State of Somalia MoU from sparking wider regional conflict. His stress on dialogue and abiding by international norms signals a cautious hope that diplomacy can keep the peace.
With Ethiopia and Somalia at this crossroad, the world watches. The looming threat of further chaos in the Horn of Africa makes the U.S. position crucial. Hammer’s firm support for Somalia hints at a subtle push for both nations to settle their disputes respectfully.
