UN Security Council Slaps Sanctions on Trio of Al-Shabaab Ringleaders

The UNSC has sanctioned three al-Shabaab leaders in Somalia, per the latest statement. These leaders are now on the sanctions list under Resolution 2713, facing financial restrictions and travel bans. The decision was made after Somalia’s request, as the UK Mission to the UN stated on Wednesday. Al-Shabaab, known for violent attacks on civilians, must be held accountable for their actions. Insecurity in the Horn of Africa has been a longstanding issue, mainly due to al-Shabaab and Daesh/ISIS groups. Al-Shabaab has been in conflict with the Somali government and ATMIS since 2007. Attacks have increased since the declaration of “all-out war” by President Mohamud.
