Somalia Opposition Alleges Plot Against Former Army Chief, Warns of Escalation

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Opposition leaders in Somalia accused security forces loyal to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday of preparing operations aimed at former military chief General Odowaa Yusuf Rage and other prominent opposition figures, a claim that has sharpened fears of renewed unrest in the capital.

The Somali Future Council, an opposition alliance, said it had obtained information suggesting that members of the Somali National Army and intelligence services were involved in plans directed at General Odowaa, private homes, businesses, and well-known political figures in Mogadishu.

The allegations surfaced at a time of rising political strain, following recent security incidents and troop movements in the city, where disputes over Somalia’s political direction have intensified concerns about stability.

In its statement, the forum also condemned what it described as an attack on the residence of Sheikh Abdulkadir Soomow, and accused senior federal government officials of breaking earlier understandings meant to ease political and security tensions in Mogadishu.

The opposition group called on members of Somalia’s armed forces to remain neutral and stay out of political feuds, urging security institutions to carry out their duties professionally and without bias.

It also warned that the federal government would be held responsible for any violence or instability that might follow actions it said could further inflame an already fragile situation.

Odowa Yussuf Rageh is a Somali military officer who has served as the Chief of Defence Force of Somalia from November 2024 to January 2026.

There was no immediate response from the federal government to the accusations. Officials have previously said security operations in Mogadishu are intended to preserve public order and counter threats.

The latest claims highlight the widening divide between the government and opposition leaders, even as international partners continue to press for dialogue and restraint to avert a deeper political crisis in Somalia.
