The African Union is determined to play its part in resolving the armed conflict that has shaken Libya for ten years. This explains the visit in the last two days to the Congolese Denis Sassou Nguesso, Chairman of the AU High Committee for Libya, by Mohamed El-Menfi, President of the Libyan Presidential Council.

The two personalities spoke about the urgent challenges to be met, including the consolidation of the ceasefire, respect for the arms embargo, the unification of the country’s military and financial institutions, the withdrawal of foreign fighters and mercenaries in Libyan territory.

Denis SassouNguesso, in his capacity as chair of the African Union’s High Level Committee in Libya, reiterated his availability and his support for the Libyans to the end in resolving the crisis in their country.
He briefed his host, Mohamed Younis El-Menfi, on the forthcoming broadcast of a government information mission to Libya and on the convening of a high-level committee meeting in the coming days.
All initiatives by the Congolese President were welcomed by the President of the Libyan Presidential Council, who invited him on a working visit to Libya. Dates and methods will be announced via diplomatic channels.
Libya intends to hold general elections next December. Deadlines that, according to a diplomatic source, are difficult or even impossible to meet without the withdrawal of foreign mercenaries.
