Bayern transfer news: Lewandowski is expected to stay
Robert Lewandowski will not leave Bayern Munich this summer, despite interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.
Lewandowksi is the best striker in the world and scores over 100 goals in all competitions during the last two seasons. This included a record-breaking 2020/21 campaign in which he managed 41 goals in the Bundesliga, which broke Gerd Muller’s long-standing points record in the process.
He still has two years left on his current deal, but that has not stopped him from being linked with the Premier League. But as reported by L’Equipe (via Get French Football News), Die Roten is keen for him to hold on – even if a big offer comes in.
His agent Pini Zahavi is said to be more open to a move as he is convinced Lewandowski wants another challenge before retiring. Real Madrid would be the club that is most likely to tempt Poland away from Bayern, but due to their current economic situation, it would be impossible to move under the current window.
This does not mean that Los Blancos would not be tempted to approach Lewandowski next summer, although Bayern are keen to extend their contract. If they can not agree on a new deal, they would still demand about 50 million euros for their talisman – big money for a player in his old age.
Die Roten hopes that Lewandowski will continue to deliver the goods next season when they start a new era under Julian Nagelsmann. The former head of RB Leipzig has taken over the leadership from Hansi Flick, who replaced Joachim Low as Germany’s manager after Euro 2020.
Although Bayern are likely to walk for another Bundesliga title, they are hoping for a better performance in the Champions League. Last election period, they crashed out in the quarter-final phase to Paris Saint-Germain on away goals, after beating the Ligue 1 giants in the final of the 2019 edition.
