A proposed two-year cap on engagements has moved forward in the House of Representatives, where lawmakers will now examine the measure in detail.
Representative Anthony F. Williams, the bill’s sponsor, said couples could jointly seek an extension or renewal from a designated authority under the proposed law, subject to prescribed limits. The engagement would automatically end after a second and final renewal, but any enforceable contractual obligations would remain in force.
