Axadle understands. what could be an attempt to mediate an agreement. between the opposition and the outgoing federal government in Somalia. Whose mandate expired a month ago.

Foreign Minister. Mevlut Cavusoglu is said to be eager to visit the Horn of Africa. as a strategy to send a message of Turkey’s continued support to Somalia. not only as a development partner but also as a security partner.

The diplomatic source. However, did not reveal the exact date and month of the trip. But it could be as soon as possible. Currently, there are attempts in Mogadishu to get stakeholders to sign an agreement before the election, a move that could change fortunes.

Northeastern State President Said Abdullahi Deni and Ahmed Madobe, the Jubaland leader, are already in Mogadishu for a long series of talks. But oddly enough, three heads of state are in Turkey for the undisclosed mission, making it difficult to push for the talks.

Turkey is now a major player and a “strategic partner” for the Horn of Africa nation. Ankara said it was trying to mediate between Somalia’s political rivals, a move that would bring it out as a key security and development player in Somalia.

But in recent years, the opposition has accused Ankara of supporting the “illegal” administration of Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, whose mandate expired recently. But Turkey insists that her agenda has nothing to do with the country’s international politics.

Al-Shabaab has been targeting Turks in Somalia, where two allegedly died in February when a bomber targeted a road construction site near Mogadishu.

In 2019, the militant group targeted a Turkish convoy in Mogadishu, killing several engineers from Turkey and about 90 innocent civilians in the terrorist attack.
