Why Jose Mourinho may not receive full compensation if he is fired by Tottenham

Tottenham may not have to pay the full remaining amount of Jose Mourinho’s contract if they differ due to contractual provisions linked to European qualification.

Mourinho has come in for harsh criticism for Spurs’ poor form in 2021, and the pressure continued to increase on the Portuguese head coach after their dismal 2-2 draw with struggling Newcastle on Sunday.

90min recently revealed that Brendan Rodgers is among the candidates to replace Mourinho if he leaves Tottenham in the near future, while Julian Nagelsmann and Steven Gerrard are also on Spurs’ manager list.

It has been speculated that the dismissal of the former Chelsea boss could cost Spurs £ 30m to tear up Mourinho’s reported £ 15m-a-year contract, which has two years to run. However, the Daily Mail reports that this deal is strongly stimulated and that the basic salary is much closer to 10 million pounds.

One of the most important incentives in Mourinho’s contract revolves around Spurs’ qualification for Europe, which is not certain with only eight Premier League matches left this season.

They currently have two points from a Champions League place, but have looked much worse in recent months than many of their competitors and that would require a big rise in form to finish the season in the top four.

Winning the Carabao Cup later in April would guarantee Spurs’ qualification for the new Europa Conference League, although they will have to get through Manchester City for that to be an opportunity. Mail adds that the club would not see this as a European competition at the highest level as well.

Dismissing Mourinho would still be expensive and could cost around £ 20m, but that’s £ 10m less than recently reported.

Mourinho welcomes former club Manchester United to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, and Spurs will enter the match more refreshed than their visitors, who face Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday.
