Liberian House to Investigate Reported U.S. Deportation Deal

The reported transfer of U.S. deportees to Liberia has prompted the House of Representatives to seek greater scrutiny of an arrangement that could make the West African nation a third-party destination for people removed from the United States.

The inquiry follows a communication from opposition lawmaker Rep. J. Marvin Cole, who raised concerns that dozens of undocumented immigrants have already been sent from the U.S. to Liberia. Cole warned that the number could rise by hundreds.

He called on the government to identify the individuals involved, including their nationalities and immigration histories, and to release the complete legal framework and procedures used to remove them from the United States.

The alleged transfers have also revived debate over Liberia’s origins and its historic ties to the U.S., including the role of the American Colonization Society (ACS) in creating settlements along the West African coast for free Black people and formerly enslaved African Americans.
