More than 300 people abducted in separate attacks across Nigeria have been rescued in what the presidency called the country’s largest single-day operation of its kind.
The coordinated mission brought together the military, police, intelligence services and the National Counter-Terrorism Centre. Among those freed were 163 people seized during a February assault on Woro in Kwara State, where scores of people were killed. Another 145 victims had been abducted in Niger State. The survivors were receiving medical treatment at a military facility before officials arranged their reunions with relatives.
President Bola Tinubu hailed the operation as a sign that Nigeria’s security agencies are working more effectively together. The rescue comes as concern grows over kidnappings and militant violence spreading beyond the country’s traditional conflict zones.
