A Robert Lewandowski support on either side of Thomas Muller’s strike gave Bayern Munich a 3-1 victory over Der Klassiker rivals Borussia Dortmund in the DFL Supercup on Tuesday night.
In a lively and evenly matched first period, it was BVB who first had the ball in the back of the net, even though 16-year-old Youssoufa Moukoko’s clinical finish was descended for offside.
Bayern then broke the deadlock four minutes before half-time, when Serge Gnabry’s floating cross from the left wing was surprisingly met with emphasis by Lewandowski, who thundered a nod into Gregor Kobel’s lower corner.

It took Julian Nagelsmann’s men just four minutes of the second period to double the lead. The Bavarian giants launched a blowing counterattack, before Alphonso Davies’ deflected cross was knocked in by Muller from close range.
Dortmund got another goal written offside just four minutes later, when Erling Haaland broke through and coolly sent his chance, just for the flag of the line flag to destroy his party. But Marco Rose’s side came back to the game after 64 minutes, when Marco Reus magnificently attracted Jude Bellingham’s farewell in Manuel Neuer’s top corner from 20 yards out.
Bayern, however, killed the match and restored a two-goal pillow in the 74th minute. Manuel Akanji was pressed hard by Corentin Tolisso, whose tackle fell on Lewandowski to calmly finish past a helpless Kobel.
It proved the last important moment of the match, as Nagelsmann won his first major trophy in his career and the first of Bayern’s season. Now let’s see how the players rated …

Gregor Kobel (GK) – 6/10 – Very safe and secure display, often rushes out to cut long balls over the top. However, had no chance with the Bayern goals.
Felix Passlack (RB) – 5/10 – Struggled to limit the threat from Gnabry on Bavaria’s left and had some very shaky moments in possession, which provided many opportunities for the opposition. Axel Witsel (CB) – 6/10 – Positioned well to make some valuable clarifications in the box, even though his presence had felt better in midfield. Manuel Akanji (CB) – 5/10 – Very aware of the danger of Bayern’s inflated balls and crosses, read the game well to reduce the danger. Destroyed a good performance in typical style, but made a catastrophic mistake that led to Bayern’s third.Nico Schulz (LB) – 5/10 – Sounds sufficient in defensive ability even though it had very little impact on the pitch and seemed to rely on hit-and-jump balls too often.

Jude Bellingham (CM) – 7/10 – Not as impressive an achievement as we have seen but still shown that the infallible drive and endurance in midfield always fights for the ball. Drove well and used a lot of holdings in advanced areas, especially to get assists for the Reus strike.
Mahmoud Dahoud (CM) – 7/10 – Nicely cut space in the middle of the field with good effect and was more often than not dominant in 50/50 challenges. Showed some nice features and good fit area when expanding from the depth as well.
Gio Reyna (CM) – 6/10 – Disappointing, he showed little of his sweet attacking ability and seemed more focused on defensive tasks. Went well, suffocated some Bayern moves but missed in the last third.
Marco Reus (AM) – 7/10 – Uncharacteristically sloppy on the ball and gave away the possession too many times, but oh my god what a goal. Incredible finish to get your side back to fighting in the match.

Erling Haaland (ST) – 7/10 – Intelligent and immobile in forward-looking areas, who show great calm and vision when he connects things and makes fantastic runs behind his opponent’s high line. Saw a good effort saved brilliantly by Neuer before half time but just could not get that ball in the back of the net.
Youssoufa Moukoko (ST) – 6/10 – Gave glimpses of his windy pace and made some lovely runs into dangerous areas. Was unlucky to have pushed just offside in the build-up to his illicit strike.

Made two crucial saves when presented with one-on-one scenarios during the first half and remained solid afterwards.Josip Stanisic (RB) – 7/10 – Deal with Dortmund left impressive, seemingly unafraid of his opponent’s explosive players.Dayot Upamecano (CB) – 7/10 – A huge presence in the back line, which uses its monstrous physique to protect its box. Dortmund’s attack struggled when he met him in one-on-one situations.Niklas Sule (CB) – 7/10 – Didn’t worry too much in defense, but was brilliant in possession, showed great calm to distribute and carry the ball out from the back.Alphonso Davies (LB) – 8/10 – Became a high position all the time and got his reward with an assist for Bayern’s second goal. Joshua Kimmich (CM) – 6/10 – Sprayed the ball well, but could not really get hold of procedures and was not as prominent in the game as we are used to. Leon Goretzka (CM) – 6/10 – Showed his dizzying athleticism and dynamism as he bombed up and down the pitch to add a presence at both ends.Thomas Muller (AM) – 6/10 – Floated around the pitch to pick out pockets of space but failed to influence holding procedures. Kingsley Coman (RW) – 6/10 – Good construction game at the business end of the field, which shows good feet and tricks to create space for themselves and deliver balls to the area. Also volleyed narrowly wide in the first half, lacking what would have been an emphatic strike. Robert Lewandowski (ST) – 8/10 – Quite anonymous in all honesty, rarely gets the service to bother the Dortmund back line so much. But give him a chance and he will score, which is exactly what happened – twice. Inevitable.
Serge Gnabry (LW) – 8/10 – Probably saw things happen in the last third as a son when the first whistle blew. Gave Passlack a terrible time with his movement and his clinical feet, eventually he crossed perfectly for rushing Lewandowski to go home.
