Somalia: U.S. Military Hits ISIS Targets in Puntland State Airstrike

BOSASO, Somalia – The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) says it conducted an airstrike in Somalia’s Puntland State state against Islamic State (ISIS) fighters, underscoring the continuing pace of U.S. military activity in the country.

According to a statement issued Saturday, the strike was carried out on April 17 in a rugged mountainous area about 30 miles southeast of the port city of Bosaso, in the Bari region. The operation comes amid an increase in U.S. air operations across Somalia.

AFRICOM did not disclose casualty figures or assess damage, citing a policy adopted last year that limits the release of operational details.

The United States remains a regular presence in Somali airspace, striking both ISIS and al-Shabaab targets in support of the Somali federal government and the Federal States as they press ahead with counter-terrorism operations.

The northern strike was reported as U.S. aerial support also continued in southern Somalia, where fighting on the ground has intensified in recent weeks between government troops and al-Shabaab militants.
