MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somali forces and Jubaland security units launched a major offensive in southern Somalia on Wednesday, targeting al-Shabab fighters in a coordinated ground-and-air operation, the government said.
According to Somalia’s Ministry of Defense, the assault unfolded in areas of the districts of Jilib, Xagar, and Afmadow, with troops pushing into villages including Waraha Qalley, Farshabeel, Jigees, Qaawiley, and Weelmaarow.

The ministry said the operation was backed by airstrikes carried out with support from “international partners,” aimed at militants believed to be active in the targeted areas.
Officials said at least 27 militants were killed, among them people they identified as important figures within the group. The government did not offer independent confirmation of the death toll.
It also said soldiers recovered weapons and military supplies, including BKM machine guns, RPG launchers, and AK-47 rifles, along with explosive materials allegedly intended for attacks on civilians.
Somali authorities said pressure on al-Shabab would continue as part of broader efforts to improve security and stability across the Jubba region.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaida-linked militant group, continues to stage attacks across Somalia despite sustained military operations by government forces and allied units.
