Rayan Cherki put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead after 16 minutes and Erling Haaland struck again in the 65th minute, leaving City three points adrift of Arsenal but with a game in hand. Victory at second-from-bottom Burnley on Wednesday would send them top.

Cherki produced the standout opener, weaving past two defenders before guiding a right-foot shot beyond David Raya. Arsenal were level almost immediately, though, when Gianluigi Donnarumma’s hesitation proved costly: the City goalkeeper lingered on the ball and allowed Kai Havertz to block his clearance into the net.

The opening period was finely balanced, but City took firmer control after the interval. Haaland pounced after a rapid counterattack and held off Gabriel’s challenge to finish the move, while the Arsenal defender later saw a header diverted onto the post.

Virgil van Dijk delivered a dramatic late winner as Liverpool beat Everton 2-1 in the first derby staged at Everton’s new Hill Dickinson Stadium.

In what was his final Merseyside derby, Mohamed Salah scored after 29 minutes to give Liverpool the lead and match Steve Gerrard’s record for goals against Everton, taking his tally against the Toffees to nine.

Beto brought Everton level in the 54th minute, but Liverpool pressed hardest in the closing stages and were rewarded deep into stoppage time, when Van Dijk’s 10th-minute injury-time header kept alive their push for a Champions League place next season.

Aston Villa stayed firmly in fourth after a frantic finale in a 4-3 home victory over Sunderland, with Ollie Watkins scoring twice and Morgan Rogers also on target before Tammy Abraham grabbed the decisive goal in the 93rd minute.

Sunderland had been 3-1 down, yet late efforts from Trai Hume and Wilson Isidor in the 85th and 86th minutes seemed to have salvaged a point, only for Abraham to snatch it away at the death.

Morgan Gibbs-White struck a hat-trick as Nottingham Forest cruised to a 4-1 home win over struggling Burnley, with Igor Jesus adding the fourth.

The result left Forest five points clear of Tottenham in the relegation fight and four ahead of West Ham, who face Crystal Palace on Monday.

Earlier on Saturday, Matheus Cunha’s 43rd-minute goal, set up by Bruno Fernandes’ 18th assist of the season, earned Manchester United a 1-0 win at Chelsea and strengthened their hold on third place. Chelsea, meanwhile, suffered a fourth straight defeat despite hitting the woodwork twice through Liam Delap and Wesley Fofana.

Tottenham remain in the bottom three after Georgino Rutter’s stoppage-time equalizer rescued Brighton a 2-2 draw, denying Spurs after Xavi Simons had appeared to secure a precious win with his 77th-minute strike.

Spurs’ dropped points opened the door for Leeds United, who moved eight points clear of the bottom three with a 3-0 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, thanks to goals from James Justin, Noah Okafor and Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late penalty. Wolves would have been relegated had Tottenham won.

Brentford and Fulham played out a goalless draw, with Fulham goalkeeper Bernd Leno making several fine saves, while Bournemouth showed no signs of being unsettled by coach Andoni Iraola’s announcement that he will leave at the end of the season, winning 2-1 away at Newcastle to move level on 48 points with Chelsea and Brentford in the race for European qualification.
