Nigeria Refutes Claims of Concealed Spending in World Bank Report

The Nigerian Federal Ministry of Finance is refuting claims made by the World Bank regarding alleged undisclosed expenditures and the misallocation of federal revenue. Minister of State for Finance, Taiwo Oyedele, has characterized these allegations as a misunderstanding of the situation. He emphasized that media narratives indicating a substantial portion of federal earnings is being improperly channeled are not only incorrect but also misleading.

This clarification comes as the ministry addresses interpretations of the recently released Nigeria Development Update by the World Bank. Oyedele pointed out that such interpretations indicate a lack of comprehension about Nigeria’s fiscal architecture and misalign with what the World Bank report actually states. He asserted that the notion of widespread diversion of federal funds does not accurately represent the findings of the World Bank.

Additionally, he noted that the World Bank has recognized the ongoing fiscal reforms within Nigeria, highlighting an impending 2026 Executive Order aimed at improving the remittance of petroleum revenues and bolstering transparency in financial dealings.
