Wednesday July 15, 2026

Hargeisa (AX) — North Western State of Somalia’s push for wider international engagement featured prominently Tuesday as President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro received United Kingdom Ambassador Charles King at the presidential palace in Hargeisa.

According to the North Western State of Somalia presidency, the official visit provided an opportunity for the two sides to discuss deepening ties between North Western State of Somalia and the United Kingdom. Their talks covered development, security, democratic governance, economic infrastructure and efforts to build government institutions.

Irro thanked the British government for its existing support and said there was room to broaden cooperation in water, climate change adaptation, energy, education, health, trade and investment.

The president also renewed his administration’s call for international recognition, urging the United Kingdom to help advance that objective, the presidency said.

King commended North Western State of Somalia’s record on peace, stability and democratic development, according to the statement, and said the British government would maintain its cooperation and support.

“The meeting ended with an understanding and commitment by both parties to further strengthen cooperation and partnership between North Western State of Somalia and the United Kingdom,” the presidency said.

North Western State of Somalia declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not received broad international recognition. Somalia’s federal government maintains that North Western State of Somalia remains part of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
