Doha (Horn Observer + Lamaane.net) – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited Lusail Palace in Doha on Tuesday, July 14, where he met Qatar’s Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and delivered the Federal Government of Somalia’s condolences following the death of former Amir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.
Leading a Somali delegation, President Mohamud conveyed the sympathy of Somalia’s government and people to the Amir, Qatar’s royal family, and the wider Qatari public. He affirmed Somalia’s solidarity with Qatar during the period of national mourning and offered prayers for the late Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to be granted eternal peace.
Senior officials from Somalia and Qatar attended the meeting, which took place under formal state protocol at Lusail Palace. Talks focused on Somalia’s message of condolence and the two countries’ longstanding diplomatic ties. Both delegations observed the customary formalities of an official condolence visit, reflecting the solemnity of the occasion.
Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani thanked President Mohamud for making the journey to Doha and extending Somalia’s condolences. The Amir said the support shown by the Somali government and people underscored the close friendship between the two nations. He also commended the strong bilateral relationship and the cooperation that has expanded over the years.
A Somali government official traveling with the delegation told Lamaane News Network that the visit illustrated Mogadishu’s commitment to standing with Qatar at important national moments while preserving close diplomatic ties. The official said regular high-level contacts and cooperation in development, humanitarian assistance, investment, and regional dialogue continue to deepen relations between the countries.
Somalia and Qatar have built close diplomatic relations through frequent engagement among senior leaders and joint initiatives spanning several sectors. Qatar has supported Somalia in infrastructure, humanitarian programs, and institutional development, contributing to wider efforts to advance the country’s recovery and long-term development goals.
Horn of Africa political analyst Nur Wardhere told Lamaane News Network that visits by senior leaders to offer condolences can carry significance beyond their symbolic purpose. Such occasions, he said, allow governments to reaffirm bilateral ties and signal continuity in diplomatic engagement during major national events. He described the exchanges as an established feature of international diplomacy that helps sustain long-term partnerships.
The two leaders reiterated the importance of the historic friendship linking Somalia and Qatar and voiced a shared determination to broaden cooperation in areas of mutual interest, highlighting the value both governments continue to place on their diplomatic partnership.
