The National Intelligence and Security Agency said Sunday that the raid took place in the Tardo area, carried out alongside international partners after intelligence showed about 25 al-Shabab members, including fighters and officers, had convened there.
NISA said the group was preparing activities intended to undermine security and stability in Hiiraan.
The agency said its forces and international partners struck the militants’ hideouts, destroying positions, military facilities and communications and command equipment used by the group.
The government gave no information on whether civilians were harmed or whether Somali forces suffered losses.
The raid comes amid stepped-up military pressure on al-Shabab in central and southern Somalia, as government troops, local fighters and international partners widen their operations against the insurgents.
Hiiraan remains one of the key battlegrounds in that campaign against the al-Qaida-linked group, which continues to stage attacks despite repeated offensives.
