Security officers in Garissa County thwarted what is believed to have been a terror plot after arresting a man and recovering an improvised explosive device (IED) along the Garissa–Dadaab Road.

‎A multi-agency patrol intercepted the suspect at the Haji Aden area during a routine sweep, just as he appeared poised to disappear into nearby bushes.

Police said the man drew attention when officers noticed him behaving suspiciously by the roadside.

He then bolted into a thicket in what investigators described as a bid to escape arrest.

‎“A pursuit ensued, and the officers managed to apprehend the suspect after a short chase,” the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said.

‎Officers escorted him back to the spot where he had been standing, only to uncover an IED hidden there, reinforcing suspicions that the site had been chosen for a planned attack.

‎“Upon returning to the scene, an Improvised Explosive Device was recovered, confirming suspicion of a possible terror-related mission,” the agency added.

‎Detectives also recovered military-style jungle clothing — a jacket and trousers — together with two mobile phones, items they said could prove useful as investigations continue.

‎The suspect was later taken to Garissa Police Station, where he is being processed as detectives expand their inquiry ahead of his expected court appearance.

‎“The suspect is in custody and is assisting us with investigations as we pursue possible accomplices and networks behind the incident,” it said.

‎Authorities commended the patrol team’s quick action, saying the incident underscored the value of intelligence-led policing and fast intervention in stopping potential attacks before they materialize.

‎“This arrest demonstrates the effectiveness of multi-agency coordination in countering terrorism threats along vulnerable corridors,” a senior security official said.

‎Members of the public were urged to stay alert and share timely information with security agencies, a step officials said remains crucial in preventing similar incidents and strengthening community safety.

‎Security agencies also reaffirmed their resolve to preserve peace and stability in the region, particularly along border and transit routes long viewed as vulnerable to extremist activity.
