Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia’s widening political standoff drew fresh international concern Monday, as key partners pressed the federal government and opposition leaders to return to talks and settle on an election roadmap without delay.

In a joint statement released June 1, the United Kingdom, the United Nations Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia, the European Union, Sweden, Switzerland and Norway said Somali leaders must place the national interest above partisan divisions at a sensitive moment for the country.

“We call on all sides to resume dialogue as soon as possible, and to swiftly reach consensus on an election roadmap in the interest of the Somali people,” the statement said.

The partners also urged all sides to avoid actions that could escalate tensions.

“The international community stands ready to assist in Somali-led talks, should they be requested,” the statement added.

The appeal follows recent negotiations between the federal government and opposition figures that ended without agreement on elections, constitutional changes and the broader political transition.

The dispute has grown sharper in recent weeks, with the government pushing ahead with plans for one-person, one-vote elections while critics say major reforms are being advanced without enough consensus.

International partners have repeatedly urged restraint, dialogue and an inclusive political process, warning that the unresolved dispute could further unsettle the country.
