The Ghana Formed Police Unit-5, or GFPU-5, will be stationed in Mogadishu, Baidoa and Beletweyne, where its officers will work alongside the Somali Police Force through joint operations, specialized training and mentorship.

The unit takes over from GFPU-4, whose members have finished their deployment after supporting the Somali Police Force in carrying out the AUSSOM mandate.

AUSSOM Police Coordinator ACP Dr. Samuel Asiedu Okanta called on the incoming officers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, discipline and conduct throughout their mission.

He said the Ghanaian contingent would be central to building the Somali Police Force’s capacity and to advancing Somalia’s wider peace, security and stabilization efforts.

The deployment forms part of AUSSOM’s wider push to bolster Somali security institutions as the country continues its drive to take full responsibility for national security.
