Somalia’s National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) said it has intercepted a large stockpile of explosive chemicals that were allegedly intended for al-Shabaab militants operating in the country’s south.

The agency said the seizure took place Thursday evening during a targeted security operation in the Lower Shabelle region.
The militants had hidden more than 100 containers of the chemicals in the Jilib Marka area after becoming aware that security forces were monitoring their movements, NISA said.
According to the agency, the raid broke up terrorist support networks, cut off supply lines, and removed material meant for planned attacks.
“This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle al-Shabaab’s terror network, particularly targeting the supplies and equipment used in terrorist attacks,” NISA said in a statement.
The action comes as the government steps up a broad, multi-front campaign against the group across Somalia.
