In a dramatic turn in a high-profile corruption probe, businessman Vusimusi “Cat” Matlala has withdrawn from a plea bargain after a judge signalled a tougher sentence — 12 years behind bars instead of the eight-year term originally negotiated.
Matlala had admitted guilt to charges of corruption, fraud and money laundering as part of a deal that promised a reduced sentence and his cooperation in testimony against senior police figures, notably National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola, who has denied the accusations. Prosecutors said they remain confident of winning convictions even without Matlala’s cooperation.
The matter is set to return to court on 11 September. Matlala, who is also fighting a separate murder charge that he denies, is expected to appear before the Madlanga Commission, which is probing claims that organised crime has infiltrated South Africa’s police service.
