Mogadishu (AX) — Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation on Saturday issued an urgent appeal to halt inter-clan clashes in Jalalaqsi district of the Hiiraan region, after fresh violence left people dead and injured and damaged civilian property.
The ministry said it was deeply saddened by the latest fighting and pressed all sides to stop the hostilities at once to avert further deaths and destruction.
The ministry called on both sides to avoid incitement and choose peace, dialogue and reconciliation.
It also warned the public against circulating unverified reports or messages that could deepen tensions and further fuel the unrest.
The ministry praised traditional elders, religious scholars, women, youth and the Hiiraan regional administration for their efforts to ease the crisis.
It urged local leaders and residents to keep working toward reconciliation and a peaceful settlement to the dispute.
More broadly, the ministry appealed to Somali society to safeguard peace, unity and brotherhood, saying civil conflict continues to stand in the way of the country’s stability and development.
The statement came after recent fighting in Jalalaqsi that Hirshabelle officials said started as a disagreement between two families before expanding into wider inter-clan violence.
