Djibouti (AX) — A new regional initiative backed by IGAD and the African Development Bank Group is targeting one of the Horn of Africa’s most persistent challenges: how to spot danger early enough to stop it from escalating.
The project, called SECURES-IGAD, is short for Strengthening Early-warning Data and Crisis-prevention for Regional Stability in IGAD Member States.
It is designed to benefit Djibouti, Sudan, Somalia and South Sudan by upgrading data-driven early warning systems and bolstering the ability of institutions to detect, prevent and respond to emerging threats tied to fragility and instability.
Officials said the effort will also reinforce IGAD’s Conflict Early Warning and Response Mechanism, known as CEWARN, while narrowing the long-standing divide between warning signs and concrete action.
The launch event brought together officials from IGAD, the African Development Bank and member states, who gathered to align on the project’s objectives and the framework for carrying it out.
A two-day technical meeting followed, with participants turning to the practical details: operational planning, financial management, monitoring and evaluation, procurement and gender-responsive implementation.
IGAD and the African Development Bank said the partnership is part of wider efforts to advance peace, stability and resilience across the region.
