Ethiopian ISIS Member Apprehended in Bari’s Counterterrorism Sweep in Somalia

In the rugged and remote mountains of Bari, Somalia, a significant development took place on Thursday when Puntland security forces successfully captured an Ethiopian man tied to ISIS. This arrest is part of a larger counterterrorism drive, and the army shared this intriguing story with the world.

According to a military spokesperson, “The individual, seemingly worn out and seemingly middle-aged, surrendered willingly, possibly due to the mounting pressure Daesh is facing lately.”

The operation wasn’t just a spontaneous act, though. It was a well-planned and thorough effort within the mountainous terrains of the Bari region. On a specific Tuesday, a raid was launched on the village of Bali Dhidin, underlining the proactive steps taken by the security forces to root out extremist threats.

In an ambitious push last month, Puntland announced Operation Hillac, a focused initiative aimed explicitly at neutralizing ISIS militants. This new strategy reflects a robust effort to extinguish extremist influences that have grown since 2015.

Given the shadowy rise of ISIS in the Puntland region, particularly their involvement in illicit financial activities such as extorting millions from businesses centered around Bosaso, the economic lifeblood of Puntland, it becomes evident why such rigorous operations were imperative.

In essence, the operation serves not just as a tactical maneuver but a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle against extremism in the region and the Somali commitment to safeguarding peace and stability in their lands.
