According to the latest National Coffee Data Trends (NCDT) report released by the National Coffee Association (NCA), 66 percent of American adults drink coffee every day.
For some, that means having coffee before eating any food. Dr. Brunilda Nazario, MD, chief medical editor, Medical Affairs, at WebMD, said coffee’s impact depends on multiple factors, including the caffeine dose and how the drink is prepared.
What is in coffee
“What’s in your coffee depends on where the beans come from, and also how you brew them. ‘But the most active ingredient is what gives us that much-needed morning boost! It’s caffeine,’ says Dr. Nazario. ‘It stimulates the brain. It’s the perfect way to wake up and get energized for the day ahead, and it’s the most studied. Caffeine also affects other organs.’”
Potential health benefits
Dr. Nazario said some research has linked regular coffee drinking with lower risk for certain conditions. “Some studies have suggested that enjoying coffee may reduce the risk of certain conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and possibly fatty liver disease compared to non-coffee drinkers,” she said.
Potential downsides
While coffee may have benefits, Dr. Nazario cautioned that certain brewing methods can also be associated with less favorable effects. “But if you’re enjoying a nice cup of the unfiltered stuff, like Turkish or French press, it’s good to know that these brews have compounds that can raise bad cholesterol. Moderation can help keep things in balance,” she said.
She also said it may be premature to treat coffee as a health recommendation. “Because we still have more to learn about the connection between drinking coffee and these health benefits, it’s a little premature to start recommending coffee as a way to improve your health.”
What happens on an empty stomach
Dr. Nazario said the experience of drinking coffee without food can vary by how much people drink, and that caffeine can be absorbed quickly. “When it comes to caffeine, it really depends on how much you drink. Usually, eating less than 1-2 cups a day is perfectly fine and shouldn’t cause any problems. However, caffeine is quickly and completely absorbed by your stomach, and if you drink it on an empty stomach, you may feel its effects more intensely,” she explained.
She added that some people may experience side effects. “Some people may experience side effects such as fast heart rate, tremors, headache, stomach upset or nausea.”
Listen to your body
Dr. Nazario said the key is paying attention to individual tolerance. “Enjoy your coffee, but listen to your body!” she said.
She also suggested alternatives for people looking for less caffeine while still getting an energy boost. “Consider trying black tea, green tea, yerba mate or matcha. Each offers its own unique flavors and benefits.”
Dr. Nazario described the approach as individualized rather than one-size-fits-all: “There are also some good alternatives to coffee, which have less caffeine but can still give you the energy boost you’re looking for,” she said.
