Clan Vendettas Trigger Retreat from Al-Shabaab Battlefronts

Clan Vendetta Triggers Army Retreat from Anti-Al-Shabaab Battle Lines

BELEDWENE, Somalia – In a somber ceremony in Beledweyne within the Hiiraan region, six brave soldiers from the Somali National Army (SNA) were laid to rest on Sunday. This poignant moment followed discussions among community leaders seeking to navigate this heartbreaking incident.

These soldiers tragically lost their lives in El-Baraf in the Middle Shabelle area, alleged to have fallen victim to “clan revenge.” This act of violence incited a troop rebellion, as comrades from the soldiers’ tribe withdrew from their mission against the terrorist group Al-Shabaab in central Somalia.

Despite tensions simmering over ensuring justice is served, an accord was struck between the Hawadle and Abgal tribal elders before the memorial rites. As reports detail, the soldiers were ambushed and shot in the head by a clan militia while they were on leave, journeying home to visit family in the Hiiraan region.

In light of last week’s tragedy, General Odowaa Yusuf Rage, head of the SNA, has ardently vowed to ensure justice is served.

The military court hasn’t hesitated, swiftly issuing arrest orders for 14 individuals linked to the atrocity. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre has firmly decided against using clan mediation as a method to resolve the case.

Amidst Somalia’s struggle on several fronts against the notorious Al-Shabaab, the loss of these six soldiers underscores the nation’s ongoing conflicts and challenges.
