Ugandan parliamentarians on Wednesday (August 17) called for clarification on the government’s proposal to welcome people fleeing Kabul after the Taliban took control of Afghanistan over the weekend. While negotiations are still ongoing to complete the terms of this reception in the Ugandan Parliament, some have expressed reservations.
The proposal is shared by the National Assembly. Deputies such as Norah Bigirwa-Nyendwoha asked on Wednesday, August 18, for details on the reception of these refugees, given that it is “a matter of national importance”.
MP Gilbert Olanya meanwhile wonders about Uganda’s ability to welcome other refugees when it is already worth almost 1.5 million: “When it comes to receiving refugees. Refugees, the minister responsible for this issue must first consult Parliament to get its approval, then we can move on ”.
Third world host country for refugees For its part, MP Asuman Basalirwa recalls that Uganda has signed the Convention on the Status of Refugees. “We have not yet relinquished our obligations under the Refugee Conventions, we are bound by international law to welcome refugees.”
Uganda is one of the African states that Washington requested on Sunday, August 15, to welcome Afghan refugees. It is the third host country for refugees in the world and the first in Africa.
