Barcelona came out swinging and pulled the tie level on the night through goals from Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres, but Ademola Lookman’s finish and a commanding performance from goalkeeper Juan Musso kept Atletico’s nerve intact and the visitors at bay.
There were few surprises in either starting lineup, with Gavi returning in midfield for Barcelona while Robin Le Normand and Clement Lenglet started in central defense for Atletico.
From the opening moments, it was obvious neither side intended to sit back. Yamal slalomed through the Atletico defense after just 50 seconds, only to be denied by Musso.
The goalkeeper had no answer in the fourth minute, however, when Barcelona struck first. Lenglet was caught in possession, Torres threaded the ball through, and Yamal finished with a composed touch to give the visitors the lead.
Dani Olmo nearly made it 2-0 in the ninth minute, but Musso stretched out an arm to push the effort wide.
The pattern soon settled in: Barcelona controlled possession and pressed aggressively, while Atletico looked for space to break on the flanks.
Antoine Griezmann and Ademola Lookman linked up in the 21st minute, only for Griezmann to fire narrowly wide from Lookman’s pass. Three minutes later, Barcelona doubled its advantage on the night when Torres met a move sparked by Pedri and Olmo’s high press with a left-footed finish.
Barcelona almost had a third a minute later. Musso again came up big, turning away Fermin Lopez’s diving header, though the midfielder needed several minutes of treatment after being caught by the goalkeeper’s boot and emerging with a badly bleeding nose.
Instead of slipping further behind, Atletico found the lifeline it needed. Griezmann picked out Marcos Llorente, who charged down the wing and crossed for Lookman to sweep home and make it 2-1.
Musso was called on once more before the interval, racing out to smother Torres as the forward turned toward goal.
Torres thought he had scored again after 54 minutes, but VAR intervened and ruled the effort out for offside as Barcelona kept up the pressure after the restart, with Yamal driving much of the attack.
Atletico then turned to Nico Gonzalez and Alex Baena in place of Lookman and Giuliano Simeone, while Barcelona sent on Robert Lewandowski and Marcus Rashford.
The substitutions nearly paid off immediately for Atletico, with Llorente sending one shot just wide and Joan Garcia making a sharp reflex stop to deny Le Normand. Then, as had happened in the first leg, Barcelona was reduced to 10 men in the closing stages when Eric Garcia fouled Alexander Sorloth after a VAR review overturned the original offside decision with just over 10 minutes remaining.
The final minutes were frantic, with both sides exhausted but still throwing everything forward. Barcelona launched long balls into the area, and Ronald Araujo had a golden chance to force extra pressure in the 97th minute, but his header sailed over, allowing Atletico to complete its passage into the last four.
