MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somalia’s opposition leaders said they will push ahead with a planned protest in the capital on Sunday, May 10, despite government pressure, as they accuse federal authorities of forced evictions and the demolition of civilian homes.
In a meeting in Mogadishu, opposition politicians restated their support for the demonstration, saying it is meant to challenge what they describe as ongoing displacement campaigns in parts of the city.

Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame, one of the opposition’s prominent lawmakers, said the rally would remain peaceful and would focus on defending the rights of people affected by the evictions.
“The demonstration is peaceful. It is against the eviction and land grabbing targeting Somali citizens,” he said, claiming that hundreds of thousands of people have been forced out of their homes and businesses.
He called on residents, especially those who have been displaced, to join the protest, adding: “Everyone should return to the place they were evicted from to show their rights.”
Former prime minister Hassan Ali Khaire also said the demonstrations would continue until the affected communities receive what he described as justice and restitution.
The federal government had not publicly commented on the latest opposition remarks.
