BAIDOA, Somalia – SouthWest State on Sunday voiced alarm over reports that Somali federal troops and Turkish-supplied military hardware were being used in operations against civilians in the region.
In a statement, the regional administration said forces trained by Turkey, together with armored vehicles originally provided for counterterrorism work, had been redirected toward actions against local communities. It also alleged that Turkish drones were tracking the movements of federal troops as they advanced toward the town of Baidoa.

The presidency warned that such developments could undermine security, stability, and social cohesion, and said equipment intended for the fight against extremist groups appeared to have been turned inward in an internal conflict.
While acknowledging Turkey as a longstanding and close partner of the Somali people, the statement said the latest events had raised questions about Ankara’s role amid domestic disputes. It further claimed that Turkish drones were supplying surveillance for federal forces moving toward Baidoa, deepening fears of possible harm to civilians.
South West State urged Turkey to reassess its involvement and make sure its support and equipment are not used in ways that could put noncombatants at risk. The regional administration also called on all sides to protect peace and coexistence.
