Somalia: Senior Military Commanders Killed Outside Baidoa as Election Row Deepens
BAIDOA, Somalia — Two senior officers in the Somali National Army were killed in a deadly roadside ambush outside Baidoa, heightening fears of a wider breakdown in South West State as a fierce dispute over recent regional elections continues to escalate.

Col. Yonis Adam, who commanded the 8th Brigade, and Col. Ali Yonis, commander of the 9th Brigade of the 60th Division, were killed when their convoy came under attack outside the city. Government officials quickly blamed Al-Shabaab, though the militant group has not yet claimed responsibility.
The attack has fueled widespread speculation and added to the tension surrounding the area. It came only hours after forces aligned with the ousted South West State President, Abdiaziz Laftagareen, said they had carried out a military operation in the same area earlier that morning.
The violence comes against the backdrop of a deepening political crisis in the region. The Independent Electoral Commission recently declared that the Justice and Social Party (JSP), led by Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, had won the South West State elections, a result that effectively removed Laftagareen’s administration from power.
Opposition figures, among them former regional president Sharif Hassan Sheikh Aden and Ilyas Ali Nur, rejected the outcome outright. They accused the authorities of widespread vote rigging and said the federal government had used force to shape the election process.
Although Baidoa’s streets remain calm, residents say the situation is extremely fragile. Federal government forces and armed groups loyal to the former regional leadership are facing off across several neighborhoods and on the city’s outskirts, raising the risk of further unrest in an already volatile region.
