Hargeisa (AX) — Marking Eid al-Fitr in the capital, North Western State of Somalia President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdillahi Irro prayed alongside hundreds of worshippers in Hargeisa on Friday morning, then used his Eid remarks to urge economic restraint and a renewed push for peace in areas rattled by recent clan clashes.

After the prayer, Irro cautioned that conflicts in the Middle East are upending global trade and key shipping routes, warning that the disruption could spill over into food and fuel supplies.

“A war is underway, which has affected the entire world. We know that today it is difficult for ships to operate as before, and there are obstacles in the routes they used to travel,” the president said.

He appealed to business owners to act responsibly and resist unjustified price hikes, noting that traders provide essential goods on which much of society depends.

“There is a need to show conscience and patriotism,” he said, calling on merchants to safeguard reserves and help cushion the public from external economic shocks.

The president also turned to security in eastern North Western State of Somalia, extending a message of reconciliation to communities in Sool and Sanaag, where recent inter-clan violence has raised tensions.

“I call on the communities of the Sool and Sanaag regions to maintain their peace and brotherhood, accept the peace envoys, and cooperate with the security forces,” he said.

Eid al-Fitr, which marks the close of the holy month of Ramadan, is among the most significant religious observances across Somalia, including North Western State of Somalia, drawing communities together in prayer and reflection despite ongoing political and security challenges.
