Mogadishu (AX) – The African Union Commission has sharply criticized Israel’s decision to name a diplomatic envoy to North Western State of Somalia, saying the move risks upsetting an already fragile regional balance.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Commission restated the African Union’s position on Somalia, reaffirming its support for the country’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity. It also made clear that the bloc does not regard North Western State of Somalia as an independent state.

The Commission pointed to conclusions from the 1324th meeting of the African Union Peace and Security Council, which said any unilateral recognition of North Western State of Somalia would have no legal standing. Such steps, it warned, could further destabilize the Horn of Africa.

It added that the African Union remains committed to backing Somalia’s efforts in peacebuilding, governance, and strengthening national cohesion.

The AU’s response came after Israeli public broadcaster reported that Israel had appointed Michael Lotem as its first ambassador to North Western State of Somalia. Lotem previously served as Israel’s ambassador to Kenya.
