In a post on X, formerly Twitter, on Saturday, Francesca Di Mauro, the EU Ambassador to Somalia, said the bloc backs efforts to build agreement on the country’s electoral path.
“The EU in Somalia welcomes President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s invitation to the Future Council. In the interest of all Somalis, we hope for a positive response and that a constructive way forward can be agreed, especially on elections. The EU is ready to support such Somali efforts,” the ambassador said.
Charles King, the UK ambassador to Somalia, also endorsed the federal government’s outreach to the Somali Future Council. “As a partner and friend, the UK stands ready to support Somali led efforts.”
According to a statement from the presidency on Saturday, the invitation came after the president held consultations with different sectors of society in recent days. The proposed meeting is expected to address major national issues, including the country’s political future and the electoral process.
The announcement arrives with less than two weeks left before Mohamud’s current term expires on May 15, while disputes remain unresolved over the electoral model and the timetable for the next vote.
