Serbia warns US-EU ties are at ‘point of no return’ after troop withdrawal from Germany

BELGRADE, Serbia — Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić said the relationship between the United States and the European Union has reached a “point of no return” after Washington moved to withdraw thousands of troops from Germany.

Vučić described the decision as the opening stage of a possible clash between the United States and Germany, Europe’s largest economy, warning that the standoff could intensify quickly in the months ahead.

“It is the beginning of a serious confrontation that may deepen quickly,” Vučić said, voicing concern about the wider geopolitical fallout for Europe.

The comments followed the United States’ announcement that it plans to remove about 5,000 troops from Germany as part of a wider review of its military footprint in Europe. The step has rattled allied capitals and revived doubts about Washington’s long-term commitment to NATO.

A recent BBC News report said the planned pullout has alarmed European officials, who worry it could weaken collective defense arrangements and encourage rival powers.

Vučić said Serbia, which is militarily neutral but maintains close relations with both the West and Russia, could find itself caught between the competing sides if tensions deepen further.

“We are small, but we must be careful not to be drawn into conflicts between major powers,” he said.

Analysts say the move highlights mounting pressure on transatlantic ties, fueled by disputes over defense spending, trade policy and strategic priorities.
