Havertz Challenges Kane Comparisons, Expresses Confusion Over Debates Surrounding His Role in Germany Team

Kai Havertz recently likened himself to Harry Kane, questioning the public debate over his role as Germany’s primary forward ahead of Euro 2024.

Leading Germany’s attack in the group’s three matches, Havertz scored and assisted in the opening 5-1 demolition of Scotland. Despite not scoring in the succeeding matches, his contributions remained pivotal.

The Arsenal ace, often criticized for his scant goal record as a number nine, contends that the position demands more than just scoring, citing Kane’s versatile role at England and Bayern Munich as a benchmark.

“The beautiful game has evolved massively,” he explained to Sport1. “Look around Europe; true classic number nines like Erling Haaland are rare. Even Kane, known for his lethal finishing, roams beyond the box. That’s partly why the critique baffles me.

“I’ve thrived in this spot recently. I’m snug leading the line and envision continuing long-term,” claimed Havertz.

Whether Havertz keeps his spot against Denmark in the last 16 remains uncertain as Niclas Fullkrug, explosive off the bench, has impressed, notably manager Julian Nagelsmann.

Fullkrug boasts an impressive record, with a striking minutes-per-goal ratio bettered only by Poland’s Ernst Wilimowski among Europeans with significant minutes in major tournaments.

“Starting positions are up for grabs,” Havertz added. “Confidence is key, and performance in training and matches influences selections. I’m committed to excelling. As for Denmark, they’re formidable, but our squad’s caliber gives me confidence in our victory.”
