Mexico’s Coach Lozano Reveals Control Over Future Uncertain Following Copa America Departure

Mexico’s hopes to advance from Group B at the Copa America were dashed when they tumbled out of the competition on Sunday.

Jaime Lozano’s tenure as head coach of Mexico is hanging by a thread after his squad’s dismal performance. Despite clinching the Gold Cup last year, Lozano’s squad didn’t meet expectations this time and he admitted that any decision regarding his future is now out of his hands.

Mexico, tipped as top contenders, ended up as the most shocking dropout of the tournament thus far. Ecuador’s resolute 0-0 standoff on Sunday clinched their spot ahead of the 2026 World Cup co-hosts, based on goal difference.

“Disappointment and uncertainty naturally follow when goals remain unachieved, regardless of leadership,” remarked Lozano. He praised his team’s enduring belief and commitment throughout the match despite the dismal outcome, asserting, “The decision about my future rests in the hands of others.”

During the crucial match, Mexico launched 19 shots yet only three hit the mark, garnering a mere 0.89 expected goals (xG) against Ecuador, who now prepare to confront Argentina in the quarter-finals.

Ecuador’s coach, Felix Sanchez, admitted the colossal challenge ahead but remained optimistic. “It’s like another final for us, our squad is buzzing with high spirits and motivation, and we’re all set to battle against a formidable team.”

Sanchez expressed his full trust in his team’s potential, “Our lads have shown their mettle in the previous games, and we understand our odds. It’s 11 on 11, and we’ll pull out all the stops to seize a victory.”

Elsewhere, Venezuela sustained their unbeaten run by trouncing Jamaica 3-0 in Austin. They now gear up to face Canada in the quarterfinals.
