Uganda’s long-serving leader Yoweri Museveni was inaugurated for another term on Tuesday in the capital, Kampala, at a ceremony drawing regional heads of state, diplomats and senior officials from around Africa.

Museveni won a seventh term after the January 15 presidential election, taking 71 percent of the vote. His main challenger, Robert Kyagulanyi, better known as Bobi Wine, finished with 24 percent.

Speaking to invited guests and supporters, Museveni said his government would concentrate on strengthening the economy, deepening regional cooperation and helping preserve stability in East Africa.

He also said his new term would continue to emphasize infrastructure projects and broader economic transformation.

Police deployed

Security forces were stationed across Kampala before the swearing-in to control crowds and keep the ceremony running smoothly, according to media reports.

Museveni, 81, has led Uganda for four decades and ranks among Africa’s longest-serving presidents. The country has no presidential term limits and removed the age cap for the presidency in 2017.
