Sustenance and Support: Turkish Forces in Somalia Extend Lifeline to Wounded Soldiers’ Loved Ones

Turkish authorities stationed in Mogadishu’s military base in Somalia have confirmed the delivery of food assistance to the families of two wounded soldiers from the Gorgor Unit. These soldiers are currently hospitalized at the Recep Tayyip Erdogan Training and Research Hospital for treatment.

The aid was distributed to aid the families of the injured soldiers and to show continuous support for them, officials stressed. Furthermore, it was mentioned that the assistance was aimed at backing the military personnel actively engaged in security and anti-terrorism operations, along with their families.

Türkiye’s largest foreign base

TURKSOM, the Somali Turkish Task Force Command, is the largest overseas base for Türkiye. Following the signing of the “Defense and Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement” in February 2024, the base’s strategic significance has notably heightened.

The base, commonly referred to as TURKSOM, was inaugurated on September 30, 2017. Training programs are conducted for Somali army, air force, and navy personnel at the Anadolu Barracks.

Upon Somalia’s request, support in counter-terrorism efforts will also be expanded to maritime security, paving the way for the Somali population to tap into the sea’s resources.
